Growing up, his family was inseparable. Close knit, they held family barbecues every weekend in the summer. But when he was 12 his mother began losing her hearing. They had to adapt their everyday life to this new change and Cullen quickly discovered he loved sign language. He made deaf friends and enjoyed learning about the culture. After high school he chose to study the culture even more and eventually was asked by Rose Point to return as the Deaf Studies teacher. He happily accepted. But when he was 27 he was diagnosed with the same disease his mother has. He is preparing himself for the hearing loss that may occur as it progresses.
